In brief

Check the identity of a hotel website

A logo and a working page do not identify the operator. Cross-check the domain, name, address and booking confirmation before sending payment.

1. Separate property, seller and directory

Write down who sells the stay, collects payment and handles amendments. A distributor may display the hotel’s trading name. Compare the complete address and room category with your booking documents.

2. Read the exact domain

Check the complete domain, including similar letters, hyphens and the ending. An HTTP response only shows that a server responds; it does not prove its identity. Find a contact independently of the advertisement or message received.

3. Review an unexpected payment request

The FTC reports travel messages impersonating hotels. Verify unusual requests through independently found contacts. Have the property name, dates and booking reference ready, and ask whether the amount appears on the reservation. Do not email complete card details.

4. Keep useful evidence

Keep the original confirmation, page address, amount and displayed terms. Ask for an explanation if the payment recipient or channel changes. A screenshot helps explain a problem but does not replace confirmation from the seller.

Frequently asked questions

Useful answers before booking

Does a padlock guarantee the hotel?

It concerns the connection to the displayed domain. It does not identify the seller or confirm that the hotel is operating.

Does a directory link provide a guarantee?

No. The profile distinguishes public-source data and the technical check date. Check current content and seller identity before booking.
